FE exam prep options compared (2026): what do they cost and what do you get?

FE exam prep in 2026 spans a wide price range. PrepFE starts at $79.99 for one month of access, and School of PE’s FE Civil OnDemand course tops out at $1,999 for 12 months. In between you’ll find NCEES’s own practice exams (price shown after you log in), PPI’s self-study and OnDemand tiers, FE Academy’s monthly lecture and community access, and Engineer Exam Lab’s $59 or $89 a month daily-problem community. The table below lists published prices and contents as of October 3, 2026, so you can match format to budget.

How to compare FE prep options

Before you look at price, decide what you actually need. Different products sell different combinations of these:

  • Practice problems with full, worked explanations
  • Timed, full-length mock exams that match the real exam’s pacing
  • Recorded video lectures covering the knowledge areas
  • Live-taught classes with a set schedule
  • A community or tutor you can ask questions
  • Calculator training for the model allowed on exam day

A question bank gets you volume. A course gets you structure and instruction. A community gets you ongoing support and someone to check your reasoning. Many of the options below bundle two or more of these, which is why their prices come in tiers.

Notes on each option

NCEES sells its own practice exams directly inside MyNCEES, but the price only shows once you’ve logged in, so you can’t comparison-shop it without an account.

PrepFE’s published plans are one-time totals with no auto-renewal: $79.99 for one month, $99.99 for three months (about $33.33 a month), or $119.99 for six months (about $20.00 a month). PrepFE also advertises a pass guarantee in the form of a free repeat subscription if you don’t pass.

PPI’s FE Civil line goes beyond the two tiers in the table. Past the Learning Hub and OnDemand tiers, PPI lists a Live Online course starting at $1,295 on sale (regularly $1,795) and a tutoring-plus-Live-Online package at $1,595.

School of PE’s FE Civil line also includes a Live Online plus OnDemand bundle starting at $1,199, in addition to the standalone OnDemand course and question bank shown in the table.

FE Academy, run on Skool at $89 a month, lists a lecture library covering math, ethics, engineering economics, statics, dynamics, mechanics of materials, civil engineering materials, and fluid mechanics, plus a full FE Civil practice exam, a course on the TI-36X Pro calculator, weekly office hours, a student community, and direct instructor support.

Engineer Exam Lab runs two tiers on Skool: Standard at $59 a month (or $590 a year) covers FE content, and Premium at $89 a month (or $890 a year) adds PE content on top of everything in Standard. New members get a 7-day free trial, there are no refunds, and canceling in Skool settings lets access run to the end of the paid period. A new FE problem posts every day at 6:00 AM Central with the full worked solution following at 6:00 PM Central, a timed weekly mock posts Saturday at 9:00 AM Central, and members post questions in the Ask category where the tutor answers with steps. Problems are generated by software from the formulas in the NCEES reference handbooks, every answer is computed and checked by code before posting, and the wording gets a second check from another AI model; each solution names the handbook section and page, the equation used, the substitution with units, and why each wrong answer choice is wrong. The first daily problem posts October 4, 2026.

Which option fits your situation

If your budget is tight and you mainly want volume, PrepFE’s $79.99 one-month plan or School of PE’s $139 one-month question bank get you problems without a long commitment. If you learn best from structured video lectures, PPI’s OnDemand tier or School of PE’s OnDemand course are built around recorded instruction. If you want live teaching with a set schedule, PPI’s Live Online or School of PE’s Live Online plus OnDemand bundle are the options that include it. If you want a steady, ongoing stream of fresh problems with a community and someone to ask when you’re stuck, FE Academy and Engineer Exam Lab are both monthly communities rather than one-time courses, and you can compare them directly on FE Academy vs Engineer Exam Lab. Free ways to prepare

The FE Reference Handbook itself is a free download inside MyNCEES, and it’s the only reference you’re allowed to use during the actual exam, so working from it early is free prep that every paid option assumes you already have. If you want to test any of the above against free material first, our free FE practice problems with full solutions page is a no-cost starting point. However you prepare, our 60-day FE study plan gives you one way to split the remaining time before your exam date across topics.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest FE exam prep?

Among the published prices here, PrepFE’s one-month plan at $79.99 is the lowest single price, and its six-month plan works out to about $20.00 a month if you need longer access. School of PE’s one-month question bank at $139 is the next lowest tier.

Is PPI worth it for the FE?

PPI’s FE Civil pricing runs from $149 a month for the Learning Hub up to $1,595 for tutoring plus Live Online, so the value depends on which tier you pick and whether you need live instruction or just self-study access. Compare what each PPI tier includes against your own learning style and budget before deciding, since a higher price buys more instruction time, not necessarily more problems.

Are FE prep courses worth the money?

That depends on what you’re missing on your own: if you need structured lectures or live teaching, a course adds that; if you mainly need practice volume and explanations, a lower-cost question bank or problem community may cover the same ground for less. Look at the table above against your own gaps before paying for live instruction you may not need.

What is included in Engineer Exam Lab?

Engineer Exam Lab is a Skool community priced at $59 a month for Standard (FE content) or $89 a month for Premium (PE content included on top of Standard). It posts a new FE problem daily at 6:00 AM Central with a full worked solution at 6:00 PM Central, a timed weekly mock every Saturday at 9:00 AM Central, and an Ask category where the tutor answers step by step; every problem is computer-generated from the NCEES handbook formulas, computer-checked for the right answer, and checked again by a second AI model for wording, and the first daily problem posts October 4, 2026.
